Acquiesce – verb: to surrender, to become quiet.  Acquiesce has become our mantra — to submit to nature, to yield to the vineyard, to acquiesce to the grapes so they present their own true character.

For a memorable experience, these food loving wines are paired with small bites in our 100 year-old converted barn tasting room.

Santa Barbara, CA

Alma Rosa Winery is dedicated to making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that express the unique terroir of our appellation, the Sta. Rita Hills. Our wines are layered, vibrant and balanced, reflecting the cool climate impact of the Pacific Ocean breezes that funnel through the unique East-West transverse mountain range of the region.

Situated on the north-facing slopes of the Santa Rosa Hills in Santa Barbara County, the Alma Rosa estate vineyard, El Jabali, was planted in 1983 and became the first certified organic vineyard in Santa Barbara County. Today, the Alma Rosa estate vineyards are 5 non-contiguous plantings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — along with small amounts of cool climate Syrah and Grenache — that are farmed using sustainable practices. Vines total 38 acres across our 628-acre estate that stretches from the valley floor to the top of the range.

Sta. Rita Hills, CA

We purchased 82 acres in 1999 in what became Sta. Rita Hills appellation, and named it “Ampelos,” which is the Greek word for vine. The name is due to, we believe all great wines start in the vineyard. Also we have close ties with Greece; we were married there and own a small bed & breakfast, called Ampelos Hotel, on the island of Folegandros.

Waking up from the dream is the belief that a farmer must know his fruit, and we are resolute in our passion to produce hands-on, minimally invasive wines that both whisper and shout about the terroir. Our vineyard is the 1st in the US to be certified organic, sustainable and biodynamic. Our commitment to eco-friendly, organic farming and wine making is evident in every sip.

A cancelled meeting at the World Trade Center on the morning of September, 11, 2001, brought us to the realization that it was time to pursue our dreams of growing grapes and making wine as if tomorrow might never arrive. We quit our corporate jobs and moved permanently to our vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills to start learning about farming and wine making.

The combination of carefully nurtured vines, sustainable farming, hand-sorted fruit, eco-friendly wine making, and the passion in a wine that is elegant, unique and supremely drinkable. The clean and cared-for fruit shines through every bottle. We love sharing the literal fruits of our journey with friends old and new!

Gerret and Tatiana’s shared appreciation of beauty, strong commitment to philanthropy, and love of fine wine and food make them a well-matched team at the helm of Bouchaine.

Both Gerret and Tatiana Copeland grew up drinking wine with their families at dinner. For Gerret, a member of the du Pont family, the wine was always French; his father was a founding member of the Delaware chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and his mother was the first U.S. woman invited to join the organization. The world of wine caught his imagination early in life, and has never let go.

Owning a Pinot Noir-producing winery of his own was always a pipe dream of Gerret’s . . . until an unexpected call from a friend about an opportunity in Carneros inspired him to make it a reality. His passion for wine, charming personal style, and insistent focus on quality are the driving forces behind the winery’s operations. “I have always adored the softness, roundness and the fleshiness of a great Pinot Noir. It is a wine of unique charms. In my family, wine was not part of our lifestyle — it was in our blood!” he says, alluding to his family’s French heritage

Portugal

My family’s roots run deep in Northern Portugal, in the tiny village of Arcos, Montalegre in the region of Tras-Os-Montes. For generations, wine was a constant presence in their every day lives. They grew the vines, produced their own wine, and my grandfather, Américo, even had a small tavern in his modest home from which he would sell his neighbors a “copo de vinho” after a hard day’s labor out in the field. Wine’s rich footprint didn’t just exist in my father’s house, but my mother’s also. Harvests were a family affair; hard labor, long days, and winemaking traditions passed on by generations that run as long and as deep as the wine is red.

Today, the tradition continues. While we may no longer be making our own wine, we want to bring to light those who do. Going home to Portugal and getting a first-hand look at the quality pouring out of the barrels being filled by a new generation of winemakers, I made it my life’s mission to bring these incredible offerings to the US. I have a profound sense of urgency to invite everyone to experience what my family has known for generations – Portuguese wines are full of promise, with complexity, and styles diverse enough to satisfy even the most discerning palates.

My father introduced me to this concept over 20 years ago when he took a community college class in wine appreciation.  Watching him enjoy the sound of the cork and pour, the color, aroma, feel, and taste of the wine, I was enthralled.

Since then wine has played a central role in my life.  In my 20s and 30s, I took on extra jobs so I could afford the wine that made an impression on me.  A winery is where my wife and I started dating, got engaged, and then got married.  Then a few years ago, a winemaker friend allowed me to help in his winery whenever I was staying in the area. Here, I learned an important lesson:  Winemaking is labor intensive and challenging work. It’s where you go home wet, dirty, and with a slight headache from making decisions based on what you think a wine will taste like 6-36 months from now.  That my hard labor could help produce such an incredible work of art was a revelation, and made what had been until then a pipe dream seem a real possibility.

With that I offer you my own art, whether it be Tábla wine around the table with loved ones and laughter, or Fuil wine for a unique and memorable experience.  May it entice your five senses.

“Future Perfect” is a verb tense expressing completion in the future.

I find peace, hope and dreaming in the vineyards. When I am among the vines in Spring at bud break and grasp that one day, these vines will produce grapes that will become the wine that you will have enjoyed while making memories with great friends, food & fun. I am stunned by the extraordinary miracle of it all.

Cheers to YOUR Future Perfect!

Riley Hubbard’s journey as a winemaker spans all corners of the world and her wines are a reflection of a myriad of influences, education, and experience. Born and raised in San Diego, Riley received a degree in Ag Business with a minor in Viticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

During her time at Cal Poly, she began her career in wine in Paso Robles at L’Aventure Winery under the tutelage of rogue winemaker Stephan Asseo. From working the tasting room, harvest production, to vineyard work, Hubbard immersed herself in the boutique winery’s lifestyle and lived on the property for a few years.

Building on her experience from L’Aventure, Riley moved to the Barossa Valley of Australia and worked a harvest at Torbreck Winery. Committed to learning more, she then moved to Montpellier, France and began working on her Master’s Degree with the Vinafera Euromaster program. She studied in France, worked at Domaine d’Aupilhac in Montpeyroux, France and finished her degree in Udine, Italy in the heart of the Friuli region.

Her love of the Central Coast of California called her back to the Paso Robles region where she worked as assistant winemaker at Law Estate wines moving later to assistant winemaker under Vailia From at Desparada Wines. She continues to consult for Monochrome Wines.

Hubba wines are a reflection of Riley’s international influences, inspiration from friends and family, and her never-ending wanderlust. Share these wines with friends, family, food, and whatever the day brings.

Winemaker, Dan Glover

In a previous life I was immersed in the art and culture of the music industry, writing and producing in Los Angeles when a different muse caught my eye in the form of the seductive Pinot Noir, drawing me into the artistry of winemaking. After several years at various wineries such as Clos du Bois, Armida and Dutcher Crossing, I’ve decided now to honor my muse with a creation all my own: L’Objet Noir.

My philosophy on winemaking is really very simple. I pursue the finest vineyards and fruit, turning away grapes I believe would require too much manipulation. I am sure you will find the quality of the grapes, the vineyards and this wine will speak for itself.

LXV Wine is our connection to India. Paso Robles reminds us of India. Roblans have a deep relationship with the earth.. With each other. There is an intimacy in the ecosystem in Paso. And that expresses itself in the grapes, in the winemaking and, ultimately, in the wines.

ROOTED IN INDIAN TRADITION.                   It all started in a small town south of Mumbai… where my mother lives and regularly visits the local spice market to purchase the fragrant herbs and spices that go into our handmade Tandoori Masala.  LXV is a space where we bring the flavors from around the world to our tasting table – through wines and through   pairings. We have opened up the restrained jargon of pH and acidity of wine, to a more inclusive and experiential conversation of flavors and senses. Being one of the first Indian women to own a winery in the US, that was named in the Top- 10 tasting experiences in America by USA Today, comes with a lot of responsibility! I have to answer more questions on Culture than Vintages, on Food than Wine, on Inspirations than Medals. The ultimate goal is to create a movement that inspires and heightens moments, and that transcends the personal, business and community. – Neeta Mittal

Rutherford, CA

Situated in the heart of Napa Valley, Sullivan Rutherford Estate spans of 26 acres of vineyards and lush gardens. At the center are the family residence and winery which are open to visitors with an advance appointment. For nearly fifty years the Estate has been an oasis for artists, chefs, friends and wine lovers, and to this day remains a destination for discerning travelers.

The Estate was founded in 1972 by James (“Jim”) O’Neil Sullivan, a visionary and pioneer of Rutherford, a premier Napa Valley appellation for Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim’s passion for creating great wine predated the 1976 Judgement of Paris which famously recognized Napa Valley wines as among the best in the world.

Today, the Estate continues to build on its legacy of growing and crafting world class Cabernet Sauvignon. Under new ownership in 2018, the team is deeply investing in its vineyard programs and plans are underway to build a state of the art winery beginning in 2019.

Led by entrepreneur Juan Pablo Torres Padilla, the small private partnership recognizes great potential for crafting exquisite wines and a gracious visitor experience. “We’re building upon the foundation laid by James O’Neil Sullivan, and the estate he created during his lifetime. His deep commitment to the vineyards and sophisticated winemaking practices present us with tremendous opportunity. We share his values of hard work, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence and I’m committed to making this estate one of the best in Rutherford, Napa Valley, and the world,” says Padilla.

Tres Sabores (“three tastes”) was founded in 1999 by winemaker and owner, Julie Johnson, to explore the ‘three savory flavors’ in every glass of wine: the taste of the vine, the terroir, and the good company around the table. The property is filled with growing history as olives and vines were planted here over a century ago. Today, the farm is a certified organic (CCOF) grower of Cabernet, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot, pomegranates, Meyer lemons, and Olives. We also raise Guinea fowl and sheep who serve not only as lawn mowers and the mobile fertilization team for the ranch but also ‘go to market’ and are served in some of the finest farm to table restaurants in the Bay Area.

Julie Johnson

Owner, Winemaker

As wine aficionados struggle with the notion of terroir, wherein the character of a wine is truly a reflection of the place where the fruit is grown, I feel confident that the same can be said of people and the places where they “grow”. This is certainly true of my wife, Julie Johnson, owner/ winemaker at Tres Sabores. As those of you who have been to “the ranch” can no doubt attest, it would be hard to imagine Julie doing life anywhere else. The brisk stride, the sparkling eyes that engage you so directly, the willingness to discuss, in detail, any aspect of the wine business or of life’s many questions, and… all of this flowing so clearly from her love for, and connection to this place – it’s quite amazing.

I have watched in awe as unsuspecting visitors, imagining that they are arriving for just another tour and tasting (oh, yawn…), are revived as they stroll with, inquire about, relate to, laugh with and are made warm and satisfied by their “new friend”. In the end, there is always the warm hug and the knowledge that these folks will return to Tres Sabores one day, with more friends in tow who “just have to see this place”. They, too, will now have a connection to a place…this place.

Julie arrived here at the end of the South Whitehall Lane, mother of three, an experienced home health care nurse and successful wine marketer, in 1987. Among Julie’s many accomplishments, she is a proud graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine and the Columbia University School of Nursing and Public Health in New York. Along with her first husband, John Williams, and partner, Larry Turley, she founded and owned Frog’s Leap Winery. In partnership with the lovely and talented Michaela Rodeno, founding CEO at St. Supery Winery, she founded “Women for Wine Sense”, the ongoing national organization whose vision it is to support the appreciation for, and responsible consumption of wine. She is a passionate gardener who has never seen a weed she didn’t love to pull, and a natural cook. A friend says, “Julie cooks like others play jazz”. At the end of the day, she sleeps best if she feels that she has been a reasonably good steward of the land, and has capped off the day with a reasonably good glass of wine! – JonEVino 2009

Consulting Winemaker

To write the simple title: “Consulting Winemaker” is to believe the soul of this lovely, talented, cordial, sensible, educator-mentor who also happens to be my husband! He’s responsible for encouraging me to make wine. More importantly, he makes me laugh.

Jon has over 30 years of experience in this business: as associate winemaker at Silverado Vineyards, as winemaker at Robert Pepi, Hanna, and then finally Turnbull—people are attracted to his wines because they’re excellent and because they’re made by a man who people like to be around. He’s taken a great leap of late and crafted a consulting business that takes him to Santa Ynez, Contra Costa, India, and the Oakville highlands. Most importantly now, I get to see Jon more than when he routinely worked 15-hour days at Turnbull—which suits me just fine. Needless to say, Tres Sabores benefits from his care insight, creativity, and extraordinary skill in making wines that people love to drink, Church Key. Viva JonEVino!

Miguel Garcia

Assistant Winemaker

Miguel comes to us from Guatemala but it’s more like he came to us like manna from heaven. He is eager, takes initiative—makes the ranch stronger for his presence. We could not reach towards our goal of a fully self-sustaining land without Miguel; not in the least because the sheep and the guineas have bonded to him. OSHA may you never visit the ranch when Miguel is working to harvest olives from the heights of the Picholines! Most importantly for the wine, Miguel is a quick study when it comes to cellar quality control—so crucial when making small lots of wine as we do at Tres Sabores.

$20 flat rate shipping on orders of 6-12 bottles.
Visit Tres Sabores at the ranch and receive a complimentary cheese and charcuterie plate with wine tasting. Mention Vintage Hollywood when making the reservation

THE WINEMAKER

BIBIANA GONZÁLEZ RAVE

I grew up in a country where vineyards are virtually non-existent. My exposure to wine was limited only to rare occasions at the dinner table. A few sips occasionally stolen from my father’s wine glass were enough to inspire an all-consuming dream—to become a winemaker. So I packed my bags and left for France. And in that moment I set the course of my life, a never-ending journey pursuing inspirational wines. During the summer of 2001, I immersed myself in all things wine, ultimately earning a BTS degree in Viticulture and Enology from Cognac followed by a degree in Enology from the University of Bordeaux, graduating with honors.

Driven by the tenacity which first took me to France, I pruned vines during ice-cold winters, trimmed shoots in sweltering summers, and tended to the vines that cling to the sheer slopes of Côte-Rôtie—first at Domaine Stéphane Ogier, then at Domaine Clusel-Roch. At the famed estates of Château Haut-Brion & La Mission Haut-Brion, I completed research for my thesis. This hard work paid off – I had the privilege to work among other family-owned wine producers in Burgundy, Alsace, and Cognac. My passion for wine whisked me around the globe, sending me between California, South Africa, and France for several years before I decided to call California my home.

CATTLEYA WINES

By the end of 2011, after many harvests perfecting the craft of making wine, I set upon my own adventure—a label known today as CATTLEYA WINES. Meanwhile, I became a viticulturist and winemaker consultant; focused on vineyard optimization to produce exceptional wines from Sonoma and Napa Valley.

In 2015, I was awarded “Winemaker of the Year” by the San Francisco Chronicle, just over a year after being named one of Wine Enthusiast’s “40 Under 40 America’s Tastemakers”.

Lucia is the sister label of the Pisoni Estate wines. Whereas Pisoni Estate is committed to a single expression of the Pisoni Vineyards, Lucia represents the collection of vineyards that the Pisoni Family farms: Pisoni Vineyards, Soberanes Vineyard and Garys’ Vineyard (the latter two farmed in partnership with Gary Franscioni).

The wines of Lucia are vineyard designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from these vineyards and eponymous Santa Lucia Highlands AVA cuvées with varying percentages of each vineyard blended together.

Lucia wines are made alongside the Pisoni Estate wines using the same exacting standards for quality. They are sold via mailing list and high-end restaurants and retailers. If you are on the mailing list for Pisoni Estate wines, you will automatically have the opportunity to purchase the Lucia offerings.

Lucy Rose and Lucy Pico Blanco

The wines we take great care in crafting under our Lucy label are standouts for us in their ability to combine glamor with versatility. Because they pair well with a wide range of dishes, they’ll shine in any setting. We’re particularly proud to be able to match these two wines to a pair of outstanding causes: a fund to support breast cancer research and another to support ocean conservancy.

The Crocker Estate is some of the Napa Valley’s oldest continually farmed land, dating as far back as the 1870’s when the Dowdell family established Dowdell & Sons Winery.

In the 1870s, the Irish-born Dowdell family planted hops and grapes, and started producing beer, wine, and brandy out of their stone production facilities east on Dowdell Lane.

The Dowdells’ once-prolific business was shut down in 1920 due to Prohibition, but the vineyard continued to grow grapes. In 1971, Charlie Crocker purchased the 1870s Dowdell & Sons stone winery and surrounding vineyard, renaming it the Crocker Estate. Charlie added adjacent properties to his estate over the years, and today 85 of the 100 estate acres are planted to vine. Throughout the late 70’s and early 80’s, Charlie Crocker planted Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon which he sold to friends and fellow vintners.

Fast forward to 1997. Pam Starr, at the time the winemaker for Spottswoode Vineyard and Winery, stopped by the Crocker Estate to take a look. Pam was on the verge of launching a wine consulting business and in her research, a soil map led her from the Mayacamas east to the Crocker vineyard. Impressed with the land, Pam began asking questions. Soon after, Charlie heard that Pam found the vineyard and seemed curious, as he had long been a fan of Spottswoode wines. Under the mistaken impression Pam was in the market for his estate grapes, Charlie called Pam. Just weeks later they met, and discovered they shared a similar vision of how to make great wine. During a three hour-long conversation at Charlie’s 1 Post Street San Francisco office, Pam described the wine she could make if the vines were groomed, organically tended, and naturally balanced. Impressed, Charlie asked her if she was interested in starting a winery. It was then and there that Charlie and Pam shook hands, and Crocker & Starr was born.
